Episode Title
:  #40 - Lucy Protects Her Job.

Original Air Date:  December 22, 1969.

Guest Stars:  Mary Jane Croft (Mary Jane); Wanda Clark (Secretary); Robert Carson (Mr Harvey Morgan).

Plot:  Upon advice from a friend, Harry informs Lucy that she has been working too hard and needs to have some assistance around the office.  He suggests that Lucy hire another secretary to help her with her work. Lucy mistakes this offer from Harry as the hurtful hint that she is about to be "let go."  So, Lucy begins her search for the most nutty secretary she can find to louse everything up, hoping Harry will see Lucy for what she is worth and want her back... and only her.  Kim has just found out she's scored the lead role as a nutty secretary in a play, so Lucy finds this a perfect opportunity for Kim to not only practice her role and earn a few bucks, but to help save her mother's job at the same time!

Songs:   No songs noted.

Notes On Lucie:  Watch for Lucie as "Shoiley" Shopenauer, the nutty secretary.  She is just amazing!!  Likened to a similar character as that of Fran Fine, this was long before the days of "The Nanny."  Lucie's character portrayal, accent and knack for comedy are impeccable, leaving her audience in hysterics.

Other Notes:  It is Lucille Ball's secretary, Wanda Clark, who we see stepping in as the whiz-bang secretary, typing the Gettysburg Address in less than a minute!

Apparently, an actress was originally hired to play the part of the proficient secretary.  However, she could not type fast enough believably.  Wanda was asked to take the part instead and the actress was given a part in another episode.

A 2 minute clip of the "Shoiley Shopenauer" character was shown as an introduction to Lucie Arnaz, when she guested at the Loving Lucy Convention in California in 2001.  The audience didn't recognise her at first, under "Shoiley's" blonde wig and Jersey accent.  But, when she stepped back into her Kim Carter character, it tweaked and sent the crowd cheering!

Quotes:

There are so many fantastic quotes from this episode, here's just a small selection:

Harry:  That is precisely the reason I wanted you to hire another girl, to take the pressure off you.  After all, we’re not as young as we used to be…
Lucy glares at him.
Harry:  Err…. I’m not as young as we used to be….?  You’re not as young as I used be….?

(Harry has just given Lucy some roses)
Mary Jane:  Gee, Harry, you're sure being nice.
Harry:  And, look.... I got roses!
Mary Jane:  Wow!  They must have cost a fortune, Lucy, but to change him it was worth it!
Harry:  SHE DIDN'T BUY THE ROSES!!

Harry:  Did you pick up the stamps?
Shoiley:  Oh yes, Sir, I soitently did, all 500 of them.
Harry:  Well, where are they?
Shoiley:  Here! (She hands Harry a few fistfuls of loose stamps).
Harry:  ...Didn't they give them to you in a roll?
Shoiley:  Well of course.  But, I wanted to be sure they didn't cheat you, so I counted them!

Shoiley:  (Answering the phone) Carter's Eunuch Employment Agency...
Harry:  That's UNIQUE!

Harry:  Let's take some dictation.
Shoiley:  ....Dictation?
Harry:  Yes, dictation!
Shoiley:  Ohhhhh you mean those little squiggly things you put on paper??  Sure!  You talk, I'll squiggle!

Shoiley:  You mean I'm fired?
Harry:  You soitenly are, Shoiley!
