** SET 4. **
Lucie, A few years ago I remember seeing an Academy Awards telecast when you did the opening musical/dancing number. You were absolutely fabulous! I remember reading one critic say that your performance was so strong, nothing could top it the rest of the night... including the Best Actor and Best Actress Awards! Is there any way we can get a copy of this performance? I also read in "THE LUCY BOOK" that you did a special with your Dad and brother and Vivian Vance in 1968. I am sorry I never saw this. You did an old I Love Lucy musical bit, and your were even funnier than your Mom, I read. Is there any way we can get a copy of this show too? I wish you would release a collection of your musical numbers from your television career on video!
Lucie: You've made my day, week, month, millennium! I, too, was extra proud of my work on the opening number of the Academy Awards in 1981. I remember it so well because 8 1/2 weeks earlier I'd just delivered my first child, Simon, and there I was, a nursing mother, tap dancing in 3 inch heels! You get the picture...
It was a great number. Special material was written by Larry Grossman to "Hooray for Hollywood," and none of it was taped (oops! That's not true -- the last bit over all the dancing was taped, I forgot.) It was the only year they postponed the Academy Awards for one night because President Reagan had been shot. Quite a memory!
The other special you mentioned was the Kraft Music Hall Show hosted by my father with my brother and myself, Vivian Vance and Bernadette Peters as his guests. The number I did with my father was called, "Under the Bamboo Tree." I was thrilled to do it. It was the only time I ever performed with my Dad on camera. I think I was pretty cute, but, no way better than my mother when they did the same routine in an I Love Lucy episode. If I was good at all it's only because I mimicked what she did to a tee. But thanks for the compliments.
I don't believe you can get either of those shows on video. But perhaps, someday, if it seems right, I'll put out a compilation tape of my "forgotten" pieces, as you suggest, and you and I will buy it and be proud!
I love this page!!! Thank you, Lucie for doing this, you too, Laura! My question is: It was your father that picked the name Lucie, is that right? Why the different spelling? I like it. Your name is not Lucille, is it?
Lucie: No, my name is not Lucille, it's Lucie Desiree. My Dad chose the name. My mother wanted to name me Susan (don't ask why) but, as soon as she nodded off after delivery, he wrote L-U-C-I-E on the birth certificate. He said it was to honor my mother and he spelled it differently so that NO ONE would ever get confused. Right!
P.S. It's been the bane of my existence ever since.
Hello, Well I just want to ask one question... I heard a story that there might be a new Lucy movie out! Well people were saying that Julia Roberts was going to play Lucy in the movie! I was just wondering if you had heard anything about it, and if there was really going to be a Lucy movie? and if there is going to be one who is going to play Lucy and the gang?!
Lucie: I heard that same rumor. As far as I know it has been dropped. I can't imagine anyone succeeding at it anyway. Those two people are just too familiar. If anyone does try it, they will disappoint, no doubt. No one is interested in telling the fascinating parts of their lives -- only the tabloid endings. Not for me, thanks.
Lucie, will you be coming out with any new CDs soon?
Lucie: From your lips to God's ears! Truthfully -- the other CD (Just in Time) got fabulous reviews and I'm terribly proud of it, but it's a genre of music that is dying. There aren't even charts on Billboard to follow those types of albums. I enjoy singing songs that have a very niche market, I fear. But I'm hoping to be inspired to try again soon.

Hi Lucie! First of all I would just like to say that I think it is wonderful how you take the time to answer all of these questions. And I can't believe that you yourself will actually be reading at some point what I write right now. Well what I wanted to know is...how tall was your mom? Lucy always had a tall appearance and I always wondered how tall she actually was, because it was never said on the show. And also - did she or Desi actually have a favorite episode of I Love Lucy that they made? Thanks so much!
Lucie: My mother was 5' 7 1/2" tall (5 feet of it was legs I think!) She and my Dad had several favourite episodes, and depending on who was asking them, to when, they'd have different answers. Some I've heard were the ones everyone loves -- Lucy Makes a TV Commercial, Lucy's Italian Movie, Job Switching -- but I know they also had a special fondness for Lucy is Enceinte and Lucy Goes to The Hospital, for sure.
Lucie, It used to be a real treat for me to see you on game shows, especially the $10,000 Pyramid. You had a real gift for calming down the contestant you were playing with and getting them to relax so they could do well. Have you ever considered being a talk show hostess? You would have such a down-to-earth intimacy with the audience, and I know you could get the celebrities to open up and talk. I can see you winning Rosie and Oprah's Emmys right now!
Lucie: Honey, if you only knew. I've been offered a talk show host job more times than you'd believe. But I'm not a comic like Rosie (who can continue to be a comic while she's a talk show host). I'm an actress/singer/dancer. So I always said, "Yes, if I can do a show like Dinah Shore, Merv Griffin and Mike Douglas used to do, and incorporate my talents into that format." But no one would take a chance on variety on TV. Maybe now that Rosie has opened the door, it would be more possible, but I am enjoying performing too much right now to give it up and sit on a set. Thanks for the compliments, though!
Lucie: What do you think of all the hoop-la of Lucy-Desi collecting? Ebay for instance. I have so much that I have collected. I have a whole room full of it. What items do you have of your parents that you treasure the most besides memories & love?
Lucie: I think collecting anything that helps keep a smile on your face and your worries at bay is a wonderful thing. If I Love Lucy and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz can do that for you then that's fantastic!
My most treasured items I have from my parents are their wedding rings. They are engraved inside -- To Lucy, Love, Desi and To Desi, Love, Lucy.
Lucie, Not too long after Here's Lucy went off the air, you appeared in a movie called Night Scream. You had a small part at the end, but in it your character was able to survive an attack from a homicidal rapist by keeping her head and her cool. I thought your performance was superb, and gave an excellent demonstration of how to effectively deal with an attacker. I bet you helped some people with that performance, and I wanted to say thank you.
Lucie: Thank you. It was actually called Death Scream, and it was the story of a murder much like the Kitty Genovese murder in NYC, when so many witnesses saw or heard what was going on and no one would get involved. I was offered one of the larger parts originally, but thought that being the character at the end who figures him out, and manages to get away would be more important. I guess I was right! They play it late at night still. It starred Raul Julia and many other big names.
